You love it? Embrace it. You want it? Then chase it. | 2/25 + 3/4 playlists

Song of the week: "What Are You Waiting For?" by Paradise Fears. I interviewed Sam, their lead singer, earlier this week & got to shoot their show, and I was blown away by how good they were live. I had seen them before, but it was a different experience this time around.

I forgot to post my playlist from last week because it slipped my mind to write a blog post, so here's a Spotify playlist & then the tracks below:

  • "Rollercoaster" - Bleachers
  • "Back To The Shack" - Weezer
  • "The Exit" - Lydia
  • "Codes and Keys" - Death Cab For Cutie
  • "Luv, Hold Me Down" - Drowners
  • "AM/FM Sound" - Matt & Kim
  • "English Girls" - The Maine
  • "Sweet Time" - The Technicolors
  • "Modern Guilt" - Beck
  • "Dreaming" - Smallpools
  • "Dark Days" - Weslynn
  • "If You Wanna Stay" - The Griswolds
  • "Work it Out" - Knox Hamilton
  • "Gap" - The Kooks
  • "Geronimo" - Sheppard
  • "How It’s Going To Be" - Gerard Way

Sunday I had the opportunity to interview Sam from Paradise Fears, who was probably one of the sweetest humans I've ever had the chance of meeting. I didn't put in to interview them, but the band were kind enough to get The Blaze one and being their only press of the night felt kind of cool. I have to admit, I was a little nervous about interviewing him because I hadn't interviewed anyone in over a year, so I was rusty. I used my phone to record our conversation, but he had taken it from my hands and rested it on his knee, which I was caught off guard by and the entire time I thought it was going to crash onto the concrete with how often he was moving. But he eased me into conversation perfectly and took thought to all of my questions,  and the nerves slowly went away.

After the interview, I had a photo pass for the night (which their drummer/tour manager Joey had to haggle the venue with because they originally weren't even going to let me in) so I'm really grateful for him & everything he did for my friend and I. I didn't stay the whole show, but before leaving I thanked Sam again for the interview and got a dry ID for the station (those things when people say "hey, I'm blah blah blah from this band and you're listening to *insert station here*), which he was so excited to record.

The article on COTMA will be up on Friday morning, but you can listen to the audio from my chat with Sam below:

Tuesday, Kaley & I interviewed John O'Callaghan over the phone, and after a bit of technical difficulties, which he didn't seem to mind, we got him on air and chatted for 20 or so minutes, which was a lot longer than I thought we would talk to him. Every time I see him I talk to him for 10 or so minutes, but he's just a pleasure to chat with. He's a genuine guy and I'm really grateful that Kaley & I had that opportunity. Along with my other article, an article about this interview will be going up on COTMA this Friday, too. You can listen to the audio below:

And that leads us to today. I had my DJ shift, but next week's spring break, so I will return after the break.  Over break I get to go to Pot of Gold and Viva PHX, so it's going to kill me, but I'm stoked about it. Here was what I played today during the 12-1 PM hour (listen on Spotify here):

  • "The Business of Emotion" - Big Data ft. White Sea
  • "Left Hand Free" - alt-J
  • "Runaway" - Katastro
  • "Even Better Yet" - The Format
  • "Everything Under The Sun" - The Vinylheads
  • "Rainbow Connection" - Weezer ft. Hayley Williams
  • "Swimming Pool Blues" - Miniature Tigers
  • "Somebody New" - Joywave
  • "Girlfriend in a Coma" - The Smiths
  • "Before The Dive" - St. Lucia
  • "English Girls" - The Maine
  • "The Heinrich Maneuver" - Interpol
  • "A-Punk" - Vampire Weekend
  • "Cecilia and the Satellite" - Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
  • "Waves" - Magic Man

Today, some good pals of Future Sunsets' got signed to Fueled By Ramen, which is the perfect fit for this band (they're also my career goals if I want to ever work at a record label. I'd pick FBR.) The label welcomed Against The Current to their family this morning while I was at work, but it was very exciting news!

I'm also obsessed with their latest EP, titled Gravity. Here's the music video to the title track:

And that concludes my two weeks in review.  I cannot wait for Pot of Gold & Viva PHX, so expect lots of updates after those two events occur.

Until next time,
Deanna

Coffee cups and rain falling from the ceiling | 2/18 playlist

Song of the week: "Darling" by MAX. I featured MAX in my "artists to watch in 2015" article I wrote for Examiner and he's a featured artist to watch on The Blaze's music blog, COTMA. According to Pete Wentz's not-so subtle hints he's been dropping on Twitter for the past week, he's also the latest addition to DCD2 Records, home of literally every single one of my favorite bands, including Panic! At The Disco, LOLO, New Politics, Cobra Starship and of course, Fall Out Boy. So happy that one of my favorite new solo artists found a home with all of my all time favorite musicians.

As per usual, my DJ shift was earlier today, and I played a pretty solid playlist today. Check it out here and view all of the tracks below!

  • "Video Girl" - FKA twigs
  • "Step" - Vampire Weekend
  • "Killing Me" - decker.
  • "Riptide" - Vance Joy
  • "Stardust" - Neon Tiger
  • "Love You Much Better" - The Hush Sound
  • "Identify" - The Maine
  • "High" - Young Rising Sons
  • "You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away" - The Beatles
  • "Boyfriend" - Best Coast
  • "Sex On The Regular" - Miniature Tigers
  • "I Wanna Get Better" - Bleachers
  • "Cecilia And The Satellite" - Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
  • "Dreaming" - Smallpools
  • "Shut Up and Dance" - Walk The Moon

This time last year, I was pretty clueless when it came to local music except for a few bands here and there, but now I've expanded my horizons and learned about so many local bands and even befriended a few, which is super rad.

Coming up on one year (tomorrow, actually) marks the first time I ever interviewed a band. That's also the last time I interviewed a band... haha. But luckily for me, I have the opportunity along with DJ Kaley K to interview John O'Callaghan from The Maine next month. Super stoked on that, plus some other interview opportunities may pop up around then, but we'll see!

This week's been pretty solid so far. The only thing that'll make it better is seeing Panic! At The Disco from the barricade again, like the past two times. Here's to hoping!

And in honor of seeing the lovely men of Panic! on Friday, I'm signing off this post with the piano version of "This Is Gospel." My favorite part about this entire video is that Brendon told them to throw whatever they wanted on him, so they literally threw whatever they wanted. Beautiful.

We'll learn to live for this | 2/11 playlist

Song of the week: "Waves" by Magic Man in honor of them being announced on the lineup for the Chipotle Cultivate Festival, which I get to review for COTMA! So many exciting shows coming up this spring, but I'll get to those in a bit.

As always, here's my playlist from today. I tried making it special and played songs only by bands coming into the area over the next few months, and I did pretty well except for one. I'm seeing most of these bands this year and I am way beyond stoked for it. Listen here.

  • "Karaoke" - Smallpools
  • "I Thank You" - The Mowgli’s
  • "Blue Sky" - Banana Gun
  • "Next In Line" - Walk The Moon
  • "Acres of Lust" - Sonny & The Sunsets
  • "Cameras" - Matt & Kim
  • "The Way We Talk" - The Maine
  • "Flashed Junk Mind" - Milky Chance
  • "Where The Streets Have No Name" - U2
  • "Waves" - Magic Man
  • "Reality" - Never Let This Go
  • "Kings & Queens" - MisterWives
  • "Holding On To You" - twenty one pilots

I'm limiting my concerts this year, but I'm going to four festivals between March and April, but the lineups were way too good to pass up. March brings the Pot Of Gold Festival (I'm seeing Bleachers, New Politics, Echosmith, Chromeo, New Politics and Fall Out Boy all in the same weekend, oh man), the Viva PHX mini festival (Halsey, Young Rising Sons, Smallpools, and so many of my local favorites), FestivAltAZ (MisterWives & Panic! At The Disco are playing, the only two reasons I needed to go) and then the Chipotle Cultivate Festival, which was announced earlier this week (my loves twenty one pilots are headlining and Magic Man are slated to play).

My Future Sunsets dudes have been hard at work in LA, working on covers and music with all of their pals over there.  The most recent is their cover of Taylor Swift's "Style" with the always dazzling Tori McClure. They've done so much over the past few months and I'm so excited to see everything come together when everything's finally released. Check the "Style" cover out below:

In other music news, The Maine finally set a release date for American Candy, which is one of my most anticipated albums this year. If you're tuned in to The Blaze, we're giving away tickets to their show at The Marquee Theatre on April 3, which is the first date of the entire American Candy Tour. I'm excited for a lot of albums this year, but this one having a piece of home in it I think makes it the most special to me. I finally get what Jared said when he said a few months back that this record is pop songs dressed up as rock songs, but I dig it. I'm also so into that this album is the polar opposite of Forever Halloween. Oh, and I stayed up late on Monday night just to watch the premiere of their lyric video for their first single. It was well worth the wait.

Lastly, with my next huge concert being the Pot Of Gold Festival (I'm seeing Panic! At The Disco headline my school's spring-fling-type concert next week though, and I'm shooting some shows hopefully in early March), I didn't get to talk about Fall Out Boy last week. Two years off of hiatus, it seems like yesterday, to be honest.  I remember leaving my English class to go to the bathroom to check Twitter and my entire timeline was all Fall Out Boy. They're my favorite band, they always will be. Two, three, four, five years in the future, they'll still be my favorite band. I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing without their music. I wouldn't like half of the music I like now with their music.

Last year, they uploaded a one year later video on their account, narrated by Patrick & Pete, and honestly, it brought me to tears. How much one band could do in one year with being away for so long. It's incredible.

That's it, I suppose. Off to do homework.

8123 means everything to me | 2/4 playlist

Song of the week: "We All Roll Along" by The Maine from their 2008 release, Can't Stop, Won't Stop. Why? I'll get into that later.

But for now? Here's my playlist that was played on The Blaze today during the 12-1 PM hour! Listen to it on Spotify here (as always) in case you missed it or just want to hear it again. All of the tracks are below:

  • "Sweet Time" - The Technicolors
  • "Days Are Gone" - Haim
  • "Rude Boy" - Diners
  • "The First Single (Cause A Scene)" - The Format
  • "More Than Life" - Magazine Society
  • "Birthday Girl" - The Roots ft. Patrick Stump
  • "Right Now" - Never Let This Go
  • "Rollercoaster" - Bleachers
  • "Panic" - The Smiths
  • "Tightrope" - Walk The Moon
  • "Stay" - The Love Me Nots
  • "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" - Green Day
  • "In Exile" - Thrice
  • "Run" - The Maine

This past week/weekend was insane, with the Super Bowl going on and stuff. I'm not a sports person, at all, and having all of the main events downtown was a lot for me. I mean, it was cool, but not really my thing. I saw Jimmy Fallon rehearse for his post-Super Bowl live show (rad) and saw Walk The Moon and The Technicolors play a free concert just a few blocks down from where I live.

If you don't know, The Technicolors are a local band who just recently signed to 8123, a local record label with artists signed to it like Lydia, This Century, Nick Santino (formerly of A Rocket To The Moon *insert crying emoji here*), and most notably, The Maine. If you listen to one artist, you listen to them all, which is actually really cool, because these bands really all have their own sound, but are deeply rooted with their hometowns, most are here in Arizona, but some aren't. The band that has the biggest connection here in Arizona (at least I think) is The Maine.

Back in 2008, my parents had a family friend who had a daughter a few years older than me, so I hung out with her whenever our parents hung out together. She was obsessed with bands like My Chemical Romance, Green Day, blink-182, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! At The Disco, and then she showed me smaller bands, too. One of them was The Maine. She was so passionate about these guys, and hey, I was in 8th grade, so why not? I think the first song I listened to of theirs was "Girls Do What They Want," which I would jam out to pretty hard because I thought it sounded like a Jonas Brothers song at the time. I really didn't take a liking to The Maine until high school, but little did 8th grade me know (high school me, rather) that I would grow incredibly close to the five guys that make up The Maine.

I was supposed to go to An Acoustic Evening with The Maine last year (yeah, the show they filmed their DVD at), but I had another commitment that night. Then, I was supposed to go to the 2014 Vans Warped Tour, but was unable to get a ticket. They then announced that they would be playing the Summer Ends Music Festival, but the entire festival got rained out during their set and it had to move to a tiny venue (plus I ended up getting sick that day, so I couldn't even see them at all). A month later, they played a secret show at a really tiny venue here in Phoenix, and as usual, they met everyone afterwards (they're kind of known to do that). Since there were so many people in such a tiny venue, I was unable to talk to all of them, but I was able to get to chat with Pat for a bit and then John before leaving. It was cool to watch them interact with fans who they had seen before at multiple shows, greeting them like old friends and spending the time to really have conversations with them. I had never seen a band like that do that before, especially a band as (pretty) big as The Maine.

In January, they announced the American Candy Tour, which is kicking off here, in Arizona, which is weird, because they usually end tours here or just do album release shows here. They were selling tickets in person all the way in Tempe, so I took the shuttle from downtown Phoenix to Tempe, was picked up by my friends, and went with $20 cash to buy a ticket.  I stepped up to John & Jared's shared ticket window and was immediately greeted by John as he pressed his hands onto the glass, asking me how I was and how it was great to see me, followed immediately by a ton of questions on how school was going (he used to go to my school, weirdly enough). I was so overwhelmed by the fact that I hadn't seen him in months and talked to him for five minutes after he had a couple of drinks that I was genuinely surprised that he remembered me and the brief conversation that we had. I bought my ticket (it's still creased from when he handed it to me) and he said he would see me when they were all finished up, and soon enough, he told me he remembered me.

Friday night, they were all at the Walk The Moon concert supporting The Technicolors. I knew that they were there, I mean, they're signed to the same label, are close friends, the concert was free and in their city, the list goes on and on. I had left the pit after The Technicolors had ended (rumors about a certain boy band member being across the street started to circulate and that's something that I don't want to get into), and on our way out, I noticed a few familiar faces. Make that five familiar faces. I saw Pat first, and greeted him with a big wave and an even bigger hug, and he really seemed so happy to see me & my friends. He asked us what we thought of The Technicolors, and I had never seen them before, but I play them during my shifts on the station, so I told him they were really good & it made me more excited to see them in April when their tour starts.  We talked for a while, laughed a lot, and then I decided that it was time to continue our trek out of the crowd, so we hugged again & said our goodbyes.

John was standing a bit far back, and he got a hair cut (a very much needed one, mind you) and he looked so good that I didn't even recognize him at first. I kept whisper-yelling "John" while semi crouched so he would see me awkwardly positioned between people, and after a few attempts, he bent down, beer can in hand, with the biggest smile on his face. He asked how I was, complimented my hat, and then we chatted a bit before Halvo (Cobra Starship's bassist & John's best friend/college roommate who I had met earlier that day) had cut in.

Then this was when I was really going to leave. Kennedy saw me from inside of the crowd, and there was no easy way for him to get to me. He waved feebly, squeezed his way between people (Jared and someone else I think) before popping next to me. Kennedy went through a lot over the past few months, and he looked so much happier and healthier on Friday night, if not the happiest and healthiest I've ever seen him. I had only talked to him once in my entire life, and it was one of the quickest interactions I've had with any of them, but it meant a lot that Friday we got to talk. We chatted how we were, The Technicolors, American Candy, and life. I remembered him saying to be gentle with hugs in his lengthy post shortly after the band's blackout period ended, and when he went in for one, I half whispered "I'll be gentle" and he looked at me with a really sincere face and said "Thank you."

Also side note...this happened today:

I guess what this whole thing was a huge post saying that a lot of things mean a lot to me, but this band is one of them. Everyone probably thinks with me that every band is my favorite band, which may be true because music has gotten me through a lot and I try to connect it with stuff that's kind of sucky sometimes, but I can honestly say I've never met a band as passionate about what they do other than The Maine. So they're my favorite bunch of dudes.

Here's to American Candy. And Pat, I'm holding you to the pre-listening thing of the album you're attempting to plan. You promised that invite.

Closing out this blog post with a music video, as per usual. Here's "Run" off of The Maine's Forever Halloween, which is the song I ended my shift with today.

Have a rad rest of your week, everyone. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Until next time,
Deanna

We're all so strange, it's all so strange | 1/28 playlist

Song of the week: "One Four Six" by Eagles In Drag, one of my favorite local bands of the moment, mainly because it's all members of local bands that I love already. Definitely give them a listen, they have a five song EP that came out last year and the whole EP sort of reminds me of Gerard Way's Hesitant Alien, but not. If that makes sense.

I always feel like my DJ playlists sum up my moods for the week, because half of these songs I added into my iTunes library over the past few days, so it's kind of funny how it all works out that way. Check out what I played below, listen to it on Spotify here, or do both if that's what you're into.

  • "Somebody New" - Joywave
  • "Got To My Head" - Waters
  • "God Keeps Me Alive" - Gospel Claws
  • "Shake It Out" - Florence + The Machine
  • "Single Station" - The Vinylheads
  • "Pumpin Blood" - NONONO
  • "Sex On The Regular" - Miniature Tigers
  • "Flashed Junk Mind" - Milky Chance
  • "Come As You Are" - Nirvana
  • "Next In Line" - WALK THE MOON
  • "Take What You Can Carry" - The Maine
  • "Video Girl" - FKA twigs
  • "I Wanna Get Better" - Bleachers
  • "Kings And Queens" - MisterWives

Super excited to start promo'ing the station and Future Sunsets again. Speaking of Future Sunsets, they released a cover of the newest All Time Low single, "Something's Gotta Give," featuring Dave Days. Watch it below and keep an eye out for an iTunes!

So so so much is happening downtown because of the Super Bowl. They transformed CityScape and it's surrounding areas into a mini-campus for tourists to meet NFL alumni, go to free concerts, all stuff like that. They even built a rock wall like the Grand Canyon. Like...what? I'm just not about everything being so congested; I haven't even ventured down to the Super Bowl Central because I know how insane it is.

I'm seeing WALK THE MOON and my local loves The Technicolors on Friday though, going to the NFL Honors red carpet event on Saturday and then seeing Jimmy Fallon's monologue rehearsal on Sunday. It's going to be brutal, but so fun, even though I don't care about sports...at all.

Until next time,
Deanna

I'll spin for you like your favorite records used to | 1/21 playlist

I'm back!

This week's song of the week is none other than Fall Out Boy's "Favorite Record" off of their newest record that came out yesterday. Check out my review of it here.

After settling into a brand new school and work schedule, I managed to also fit in my weekly DJ shift. I was so happy to finally be back in the studio and I missed all of my friends who I made from working at The Blaze and I've gotten to see all of them since school started back up again, which made me really happy.

With my DJ shifts starting up again, my weekly playlists have also started back up again. Listen to today's on Spotify and check out what songs I played below:

  • "High" - Young Rising Sons
  • "Sleepwalking" - The Chain Gang of 1974
  • "Love & Drugs" - The Maine
  • "Over & Over" - Smallpools
  • "La La Love" - Neon Tiger
  • "Honey" - The Hush Sound
  • "Runaway" - Katastro
  • "Sweet Time" - The Technicolors
  • "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - Joy Division
  • "Waves" - Magic Man
  • "Talk to Talk" - This Century
  • "How It’s Going To Be" - Gerard Way
  • "Guns for Hands" - twenty one pilots
  • "Mansard Roof" - Vampire Weekend
  • "Budapest" - George Ezra

I'm so excited for this semester and just this year in general, I have a feeling it's going to be a good one. I'm cutting back on concerts this year, but I'm making the ones I go to count. First up is ASU's Devilpalooza but after that it's (hopefully) the Good Guys & A Girl Tour that (hopefully) I get to take photos of Paradise Fears, followed by the Pot of Gold & Viva Phoenix Music Festivals over spring break.

And always, a video of the week. I'm seeing Jimmy Fallon's monologue rehearsal before his show here at the Super Bowl and my Fall Out Boy dudes (who I'm lucky enough to see twice this year!) performed last night on The Tonight Show. Check it out:

I think that's it for this week. But until next time!

Five things I learned in 2014

2014 was a crazy year for me, to say the least. I transferred schools, met so many different people, started doing what I really wanted to do, etc.

Of course, I learned along the way more and more about myself, which was a very good thing. Some might say I haven't grown up, but I think I have.  Here's the five things I learned:

1. Don't be afraid to try new things.
I've always been afraid to do things, whether it was eating a new food or going on an adventure. I swore to myself I would never do a lot of things, and this year I stepped out of my comfort zone.

2. Surround yourself with people who will make you a better person.
I tried the "being a better person" thing out last year, and it really does make you happier. I became obsessed with the happiness of others, and I gained a lot of really good friends out of it. Including these two guys:

3. Go to as many shows as possible.
I love music. That's no surprise there. I missed out so many opportunities last year (cough cough Vampire Weekend) because I didn't want to spend the money. This year I spent countless hours by going to 27 shows (yes, 27) and seeing over 50 artists, some I saw multiple times, whether they were supporting or headlining. Live music is way different than listening to a CD at home.

4. Don't be afraid to talk to people.
I met some of my best friends this year. Some of them I don't get to see too much, some of them live states away, but that's cool. They're doing what they love, and that makes me happy. Most of my friends I met at shows, whether it was waiting in line or talking to bands before and after concerts. I have some pretty funny conversations, inside jokes and random gestures with them, and it's incredible, to be straightforward.

5. Be yourself.
I couldn't stress this enough. If I love something, I shouldn't care what other people think. If I want to wear a dumb sweater to school or go see a Disney movie in theaters, I should. In the words of Pete Wentz, "you are what you love, not who loves you." It just took me a while to realize it.

As I said before, this year was super rad.  The highlights of my year were meeting a band I've looked up to & admired for the past seven years and working so closely with another band who I was a huge fan of this time last year. Hard work really does pay off, and I never thought I deserved any of it.

2015, bring it. Can't wait to attend my first music festival, go to Los Angeles for the first time, and meet new people. Super stoked.

And since music has been a big part of my life, one of my favorite bands just released their final video from their third studio album. "Ode To Sleep", off of twenty one pilots' Vessel, was the first song I ever heard them perform live and it's been one of my favorites since day one. Being on this ride with them over the past year and a half was crazy, and in Internet terms, "my bbys are growin' up."

Here's to 2015. I've loved every minute of 2014.

My Hollywood Ending

If there's one thing that's been a big part of my life this past year, it's been concerts. Building new friendships by waiting hours in line, standing next to people you don't know, hanging out after the show... all of those things have definitely made my year.

This year, I rediscovered a great group of guys who I had supported in the past and will definitely continue to support in the future. Luckily, I've seen them the most in the same year out of any artist I've seen live (they take the cake at three). Those guys? Hollywood Ending.

Backstory: I supported Hollywood Ending when there were five of them competing in Radio Disney's "Next Big Thing" competition. After they came in third place, I continued to support them because of their passion for what they did and even though they lost, that didn't stop them. 2012 was kind of when I stopped, and then they stepped back out in 2013 with their single "You," but after that, I hadn't heard of them again.

Winter of this year I was scrolling through Crescent Ballroom's website, one of my favorite concert venues and restaurants in Downtown Phoenix, and that's when I saw they were having a show there. Not wanting to go alone, I avoided asking anyone and just let it be. Shortly after (literally a few days later), King The Kid announced that they were supporting the boys on that tour, so I was like "welp, guess I'm going now."

After waiting at the venue practically all day for an interview with King The Kid, I caught glimpses of HWE every now and then. They definitely changed over the past two years, but seeing them banter with each other, they were still the same guys I grew to love. At the show I talked to Chris and Tyler for a bit, but not as much as I would have liked.

They continued their tour and that's when I got back into them. I jammed out at their show for sure, but not knowing any of their new music made me want to figure out what I missed over the past few years. Having friends who were close with them helped, too, and I didn't look at them as a band, I looked at them as dudes who I'd like to be friends with. They're all my age, after all.

They announced that they were touring with Paradise Fears on select dates of the Live Forever Tour, which I had already bought tickets to, so needless to say, I was stoked. My best friend/roommate Kaley eventually had HWE grow on her, so she accompanied me to the show where we were hanging out with all four of them. Wanting to make a statement, we found Coca-Cola bottles with their names on them and filled them with candy, got Dan a birthday card (his birthday was a few days after) and Cameron a bottle of aloe because he had gotten sunburnt while surfing the day before. Dan ended up recognizing me from Twitter (the Internet is a powerful tool, my friends) and that eased us all into a weird friendship sorta deal.

And now here's the present. This past weekend, they headlined the Winter Lights 2 showcase in Mesa, and knowing they were headlining, Kaley and I, along with our friend Laura, were going. I just wanted to go and hang with the guys for a little bit before the end of the year, and that's exactly what we did.

They weren't playing until 10 PM that night, so Kaley and I left my house around 7:30. We got to the surrounding area of the venue around 8:30 and decided to sit in the venue's coffee shop to wait. There was a small group of people there, so we sat and hung out for a bit in there. It wasn't until Kaley urged me to turn around, and that's when Chris walked in to order an expresso. I never freak out in situations like that, but it was like a Wattpad-worthy fanfiction: a bassist in a band who's show you're about to see walking into a coffee shop to order an expresso.

After he was done ordering, I said hi and he waved and asked how we were. Dan was standing outside, about to walk away, and that's when I started waving from the window. The biggest smile spread across his face and he started frantically waving back and then ran to the window and threw himself onto the glass, starfish style, as I urged him to come in. He bolted from the window, skipped inside and nearly ran to us, screaming "I MISSED YOU GUYS" before engulfing us in a huge hug. We chatted for a bit about the show and how they had no idea what was happening and that the showcase was running an hour late so they wouldn't be playing until 11 or so, not 10, and that's when Chris came over and joined us, giving us hugs and asking how we were. Dan's phone rang and he gave directions to where we were to whoever was on the other end, and within two seconds of hanging up, Tyler walked in through the front door.

"Have we met before?" he asked me, to which I responded yes, and then he looked at Kaley and I again and was like "OHHH I REMEMBER YOU GUYS" before hugging us and relaxing for a bit. Chris and Dan left, leaving Kaley, Tyler and I in an empty coffee shop. We talked about Pete Wentz, New York, just the usual stuff, before the barista told us that we were getting kicked out. Tyler said his goodbyes and then we all left the shop, trying to figure out what to do for two hours.

After Laura arrived, we hung out for a bit and then blasted blink-182, The Used and All Time Low whilst dancing around like crazy people in the parking lot. Cameron was a few cars down from us and that's when he said they were going on in about 10 minutes, so we should "probably get in there" (he lied... it was like half an hour until they went on).

So finally, they went on. I tried taking pictures with my new camera during their set, but the lighting at the venue absolutely sucked, so I forgot about that and decided to just rock out because I never know the next time I'm going to see them again is.

After the show, Tyler came over to us (to be specific, moonwalked over) all smiles and super jazzed because he just performed. I proceeded to tell him that was the best time I had seen them perform (they get better and better every time, I'm not kidding) and he engulfed me into a huge hug and thanked me, asking "Really?!" over and over. We took a Polaroid together, and his idea for a pose was scaring me by slinging his arm over my shoulder and pulling me right into his side, resulting in a scream and almost falling over. We took about 20 selfies after that and half of them involve me staring at the camera pouting while he was laughing trying to get me to laugh, which yeah, it worked. We said our goodbyes, hugging and kissing each other on the cheek, and then went to find the other three.

Next was Cameron. Cameron has a very special place in my heart, as cheesy as that sounds, but we're very similar in a lot of weird ways (the big things being we're perfectionists, germophobes and nail biters). Last time they were here he was sick, which was a total bummer because I always love seeing him. His voice was super hoarse from singing, but he was still talking to us despite how tired he was. For our picture together, we pondered on a pose for a moment, both trying to figure out what to do. He threw out some suggestions and then we picked one. I had to teach him how to hold my phone to take photos because he is a bit taller than me, so I said to do it lower, so he tried taking double chin photos, which I am definitely not about. We hugged again, said our goodbyes, and then moved over to Dan.

Out of the four of them, there's no doubt I'm closest with Dan. We talk all of the time on Twitter and I can get super sappy or make fun of him and he won't look at me any differently. In the middle of him talking to someone, Kaley and I snuck behind him and hugged him from behind, and he's tiny enough that my arms wrapped completely around his body. We talked about how I forgot that he had a tattoo (his new lip ring was something that I had to adjust to) and talked about their full length, which he said is going to be a rap album (nice joke, dude). Every time I see him, we always give each other noogies and pull on each other's hair, I guess it's because we both have curls, but I have no idea where that started but it's pretty cute.

Chris finally came over and we talked a bit, and he was another one, like Tyler, who took a million pictures on my phone. Protip: never let boys take your phone.

I hope they come back next year to tour for a full length, which I know they will, but it's fun being friendly with bands who you've liked for so long. They really are a great group of dudes, and even though sometimes I act like I hate them, I don't. That's how I just show how much I love someone.

So here's so next time, Ty, Cam, Dan & Chris. I miss you nutters already.

Of course I'll be here again, see you tomorrow, but it's the end of today | 12/3 playlist

Song of the week: "Addict With A Pen" by twenty one pilots off of their self-titled record. My blog title also drew inspiration from this song because it's one of many that I can identify with, which made it a perfect fit for this blog.

This week was a little bittersweet: my last DJ shift of 2014. The Blaze means so much to me, more than words can even explain. I even sat in on the last half or so of DJ Scarlett A's set and we talked about Christmas music, our "emo phases" and movies. The usual.

I'm not sure when my shift will be next semester, but here's what was played today. Listen to it again on Spotify here.

  • "Cheap Thrills" - Junior Prom
  • "Fools Gold" - Fitz and the Tantrums
  • "Right Now" - Never Let This Go
  • "Lights" - Ellie Goulding
  • "La La Love" - Neon Tiger
  • "Mercy" - Duffy
  • "Elise" - YesNoMaybe
  • "Zero Zero" - Gerard Way
  • "Come As You Are" - Nirvana
  • "Diane Young" - Vampire Weekend
  • "Tangled" - Northern Hustle
  • "Fillmore" - Instructions
  • "Pumpin Blood" - NONONO
  • "Waves" - Magic Man
  • "Guns for Hands" - twenty one pilots

And with it being the end of the year, I only have two concerts left. I'm sort of bummed, because half of the friends I made this year I met at shows, but I'm ending the year right. I get to see the Hollywood Ending boys perform one of their last shows of the year next week and then I'm seeing Cage The Elephant, Katastro, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and Young The Giant for my birthday. All I need is an ugly Christmas sweater.

I'm not sure what next semester holds. I'm super excited, that's for sure, but this semester was pretty tough. Usually having tough classes would be hard for me in the past and I would just give up, but I'm taking stuff from my classes and retaining the information, which I think is more valuable than my GPA. Not that your GPA isn't important, because it is, but I'd rather have a B in a class and be challenged than have an A and not be learning anything.

The Future Sunsets guys released their second single this past weekend, and not gonna lie, this one hit home for me. Download it on iTunes here. Support independent music!

Lastly, this week I got overwhelmed with a lot of things. I think it's finals week getting to me. I had brought my journal back with me to school, and even though I use this blog as a journal, nothing's better than writing in a real journal with black pen and getting the pages crisp with words. I found entries from over the summer after I met Fall Out Boy and Patrick's promise he made me was in those entries. The promise he made to me was brief but super personal, and I'm going to get sappy on him for a second.

I've met a lot of band members who kind of brush you off like you're nothing. I've learned that it's harder to be mean to people than it is to be nice, and that's all thanks to Patrick. When I met him in August, I handed him a letter that I poured my heart and soul into, sealed away into an envelope that I had printed his name neatly in blue Crayola marker on. When I got to him at the table, we chatted for a bit, and I slid him my letter. He looked at the letter with the biggest "for me?" face and looked at me and thanked me, the type of thank you that you can't fake. His face squished up as he reached for my letter and then patted my hand resting on the table and thanked me again. When I went back to take the photo after the signing, he was standing on the end, but saw me up next for the photo and scooted away from Joe, looked down at the spot he made on the ground, and then looked up at me. After we took the photo, he was still gripping onto my shoulder and turned me to face him. Being the same height as him helped me to actually look at him in the eyes when he talked to me, but he brought me close and thanked me for taking the time out to write him a letter and he promised he'd read it.

That was August, and it's now December, but there is a small part of me that he'll read it, if he hasn't already. I know he takes time aside to read people's letters and he sends them direct messages on Twitter. Maybe he has read it. Maybe my story touched him in some way. But not knowing actually makes me more and more excited to see him again in March.

Any who, I'm done with being sappy. I'm ending this post with a FOB performance from one of their first shows off of hiatus, and more proof that Patrick Stump is one of the most talented front men in the history of ever. Take note of his energy though: the way he takes his hat off to head bang during the chorus of "Thriller" and his dancing to "This Ain't a Scene," it's just unreal. Performances like this are why I go to shows.

Wisdom's a gift, but you'd trade it for youth | 11/26 playlist

I'm going to start a new thing by titling all of my blog posts with a lyric from a song. This week: "Step" by Vampire Weekend off of Modern Vampires Of The City. Brilliant record, by the way.

This week my playlist during my DJ shift was a lot longer than it's been, so I was super excited about that. View it below and listen to it on Spotify here.

  • "Down by the River" - Milky Chance
  • "Left Hand Free" - alt-J
  • "The Exit" - Lydia
  • "Tightrope" - Walk the Moon
  • "Blackbird Smile" - Nightmare and the Cat
  • "At Least I’m Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)" - fun.
  • "Wide Plains" - Diners
  • "High" - Young Rising Sons
  • "You’re My Best Friend" - Queen
  • "Riptide" - Vance Joy
  • "Identify" - The Maine
  • "Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)" - Foster The People
  • "Sleepwalking" - The Chain Gang of 1974
  • "Birthday Girl" - The Roots feat. Patrick Stump
  • "Cecilia and the Satellite" - Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
  • "Holiday" - Vampire Weekend

I'm still somehow stuffed from Thanksgiving and very exhausted from my 11 hour Black Friday shift at work. Never. Again. The only positive was that this paycheck is going towards my very first DSLR camera, which I will be using heavily next semester and hopefully shooting the Pot of Gold Festival here in March. I'm super stoked to be going on Friday (very excited to see Bleachers and Chromeo out of everyone on the lineup) and Sunday (Fall Out Boy, New Politics, Milky Chance, Echosmith, and loads more).  Hopefully I can make it to Saturday (just to catch Hoodie Allen's set, though), but we'll see.

Fall Out Boy and New Politics will both be playing new music from their new albums (Fall Out Boy's American Beauty/American Psycho comes out in January & New Politics' Vikings comes out in February, both released on DCD2 Records), which I am beyond thrilled about.

Future Sunsets have a brand new single coming out tomorrow, titled "Believe," and just like you, I'm super excited to finally hear all of the new music these dudes have been writing and recording. If you live in the Los Angeles area, catch their last show of 2014 opening for Alex G at The Mint. Tickets are available here!

My last DJ shift of the semester is next week, Wednesday at 1 PM. I'm going to try and make it a special one, so don't miss out. I'll keep everyone posted on my new day and time when I'm given that next semester.

This coming week on COTMA, I will be reviewing two albums coming out: Hollywood Ending's PUNK A$$ KIDS EP and the debut McBusted album. Keep a look out for those over here.

For the first time in over 10 years I went ice skating on Tuesday night, and I pretended I was Harry Styles's date in the new One Direction video, so I leave you with that (FOUR is an outstanding album by the way, I'm not just saying that as a 1D fan, either).

Last blog post regarding my DJ shifts is coming next week, so until next time!

My week in concerts + 11/19 playlist

Wow, what a crazy week it's been.  And it's only Thursday.

Between three of four concerts successfully completed, I'm already pooped, but it's been such a fun time. Sunday I saw Magic Man (finally!) and Smallpools, their opener was Panama Wedding, who I had heard of thanks to Darren Criss (cue terrible laugh track). Magic Man were incredible, as I expected, and I had the opportunity to meet Alex Caplow afterwards, who was just as sweet as you could ever imagine. MM had even covered Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle", and I adore when bands cover songs & still sound like their usual sound. I only knew three Smallpools songs during their set, but I had fun and was still able to bob my head to the eight songs I didn't know.

Monday afternoon, David & Jose of Future Sunsets, who happen to be really solid friends of mine, came into The Blaze studio for an interview to promote their current tour and their debut single. Seeing two talented people talk about what they're most passionate about is really refreshing and reminds me that I'm in the right field. Their show was super intimate and chill (it was a house show after all), then we hung out at a Buffalo Wild Wings after, daring each other to eat a terrifyingly hot hot sauce and talking about music. Does that count as an after party or?

Wednesday I had my DJ shift, one of my last of this semester, but what I played and talked about could be one of my favorite playlists of this semester. Listen to a sample of my playlist this week here.
  • "Killer Whales" - Smallpools
  • "Beware the Dog" - The Griswolds
  • "At Home" - Dear Jerome
  • "Take a Walk" - Passion Pit
  • "Hollywood BLVD" - Neon Tiger
  • "Look At Me Now (cover)" - Karmin
  • "Interlude" - Northern Hustle
  • "Wild Heart" - Bleachers
  • "About A Girl" - Nirvana
  • "Holding On To You" - twenty one pilots
  • "Talk to Talk" - This Century
  • "The Middle" - Jimmy Eat World
  • "Waves" - Magic Man

Wednesday evening rolled around, and I had tickets to see The Ready Set and Metro Station at Joe's Grotto. I arrived 45 minutes after doors opened, thinking that the show wouldn't start until 7, but The Downtown Fiction had already hit the stage and I only caught three of their songs. But, I was there for "I Just Wanna Run", a personal jam of mine. After they got off stage, Cameron hung out by merch so I went and talked to him for a bit, and he was super sweet, so we chatted for a bit before I went to find a spot in the crowd for the next opener. Next was Against The Current, and I knew a few songs but had only found out about them from David & Jose (King The Kid was support on ATC's tour this summer, that was also KTK's last U.S. tour as KTK), but Chrissy's energy was so high and she was bouncing all around the stage. After ATC ended, Chrissy tweeted that she was going to meet people later, but I was about four or five people back, so I didn't want to lose my spot. They started setting up for Metro Station, and yeah, I used to jam out to "Shake It" back in the day, but I wouldn't call myself a Metro Station fan (I was mainly there to see The Ready Set). Metro Station came out, and I had never been genuinely terrified of a band before. 75% of the crowd was made up of Metro Station fans, but it was really just pop rock music, so no mosh pits or anything crazy (although, I wouldn't have been shocked if one started somehow). Jordan from The Ready Set came out during one of Metro's last songs and that's when I started getting into it and Chrissy came out to perform "Shake It" before their set ended.

After Metro Station, the 75% of the crowd that only came for them left, and I ended up being second row for The Ready Set. I used to jam out to "Love Like Woe" and listened to every band signed to Decaydance Records back in middle school, so I was really stoked to finally see Jordan perform live. He had inflatable kittens onstage (which were actually adorable) and his stage set up was kind of poking fun at the fact that everyone thinks he's Asian (he's not), so that was really funny. He opened the set with "Higher" and stood on platforms and constantly jumped up and down off of his drummer's platform. His drummer even busted his kick drum head, so Jordan had to improvise and attempted stand up (it failed) so he introduced his band and crew instead (that did not fail). He danced and sang his heart out and honestly, I didn't think I was going to enjoy it as much as I did.

After his last song ended, the crowd dispersed and everyone headed over to the merch tables. The bands were all hanging out, and I noticed Chrissy standing by herself towards the back, so I went and tapped her on the shoulder to talk to her. Her face lit up when I said I was friends with David & Jose and she asked how they were and what they were up to; it was one of the cutest things ever. We took a picture together and she hugged me, thanked me for coming, and I got in line to meet Jordan. When I got up to him, he hugged me and signed my CD, asking what I thought of the show. I had asked him to film a hello video for my friend, which he was more than happy to, and then we took a photo together. He thanked me for coming and I said my last goodbyes before leaving to get my usual post-concert In-N-Out fries.

Now Saturday is The 1975, and I got a wristband to meet them at a record store before their show at Comerica Theatre, one of my favorite venues in Phoenix. That show is going to be insane, but I get to see a lot of my friends I haven't seen in a while, so that's what I'm looking forward to the most.

Don't forget to tune in for my second to last show of the semester next week, right before Thanksgiving break, Wednesday from 1-2 PM only on The Blaze 1330 AM!

So much music, so little time + 11/12 playlist

It's almost the end of the semester, which means I only have 3 DJ shifts left, until January anyway. I registered for my classes for next semester, and my DJ shift is probably going to change, but I'm going to stick to Wednesdays. If you missed my set today, it's below and on 8tracks as always.

  • "No Shows" - Gerard Way
  • "I Wanna Get Better" - Bleachers
  • "Fillmore" - Instructions
  • "Dreaming" - Smallpools
  • "Hello Hipster" - decoded.
  • "1983" - Neon Trees
  • "Swimming Pool Blues" - Miniature Tigers
  • "Cigarette Daydreams" - Cage The Elephant
  • "Here Comes The Sun" - The Beatles
  • "Take Me To Church" - Hozier
  • "Run" - The Maine
  • "Pumpin Blood" - NONONO
  • "Giving Up The Gun" - Vampire Weekend

I'm really excited for next semester, registering for classes was like Christmas morning (and I had to wake up at 5:45 this morning to register, so it was exactly like Christmas morning).

Now in my favorite music news...

I'll start off with the Future Sunsets guys, because they're finally making their way west next week and stopping by Phoenix to say hi! I haven't seen them since February, but I do keep in contact thanks to email, Facebook, Twitter, and working for them helps. Their "Steal My Girl" cover dropped yesterday, and I'm a sucker for a good ukelele in song. They'll be dropping by The Blaze studio next week on Monday, so tune in during the 3 PM hour (Arizona time) for an exclusive interview before their house show in Surprise. Tickets for the show are available in the description link of the video below:

Marina and The Diamonds finally announced the release date of her third studio album, FROOT, out April of next year. I've been waiting for new Marina music for two years, and although I'll miss Electra Heart, the concept of this album is so visually appealing. Between now and April, she's dropping the "Froot of the Month", her way of releasing half of the album leading up to release. The first "froot" is the title track of the album, which was released on her birthday last month. If you preorder a physical copy from her web store or on iTunes, you'll get the "Froot of the Month" downloaded to your email or iTunes account automatically.

British supergroup McBusted (McFly + Busted) released their first single together as a band, after being together for a little over a year. The two toured together this past summer and played all of their hits on one stage, but they had never recorded songs together as McBusted. With their first album as McBusted coming out in December, they released the first single off of it, titled "Air Guitar", and the guitar riffs have been stuck in my head for a week straight. With a single as solid as this, I hope the album makes it high on the charts.

New Politics, who I saw open for Fall Out Boy and Paramore over the summer on Monumentour, released their much-anticipated music video for the single "Everywhere I Go (Kings and Queens)" off of their third studio album, Vikings, slated for release for sometime in February. They'll be performing at the Pot of Gold Music Festival on the Sunday date on the main stage, which I was super excited about when I saw their name on the lineup. The music video is just as weird as they are, and I love it. If I could head bang to one song for the rest of my life, it would probably be this one.

Last but not least, Bleachers performed their latest single, "Rollercoaster", on Conan last week, which was overshadowed by Fall Out Boy performing "Immortals" on Kimmel, but the performance below is the cutest performance I've ever seen. "Rollercoaster" is one of the songs that popped to me on Strange Desire and adding the little mini-mes into the performance is the cutest thing I've ever seen. They're also playing the Pot of Gold Festival on the Friday date on the main stage. Jack kept saying that they weren't going to forget to play Arizona and the fact that they're playing the biggest festival to ever hit Arizona makes me really happy.

I think that's it for this blog post. Check out my artist to watch article on LOLO, one of the fresh faces signed to DCD2 Records earlier this year, on COTMA here.

Stay street, see you next week!

Big Hero 6, Future Sunsets & 11/5 playlist

I've waited for what it seems like centuries to write a blog post, and here we are.

Last week I had the opportunity to see Panic! At The Disco perform their last show of the calendar year and I was lucky enough to review the show for COTMA, the official music blog of The Blaze. Give it a read and find out about all of the shenanigans that occurred here.

On Halloween, the Future Sunsets guys dropped a cover of 5 Seconds Of Summer's "Amnesia". I'm not too big on 5SOS, but this cover is proof that you can make music anywhere, including a motel room. If you liked the cover, there's download links in the description bar of the video!

I'm starting to think a news class coming in during my shifts is a regular thing. My average amount of songs played throughout my shift went from 15-16 to 12-13. Here's today's 13 songs, complete with a handy dandy 8tracks playlist in case you missed it or want to listen to it again.

  • "Cecelia and the Satellite" - Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
  • "Ode To Sleep" - twenty one pilots
  • "Take What You Can Carry" - The Maine
  • "Boyfriend" - Best Coast
  • "Alvarado" - Nightmare and the Cat
  • "Shampain" - Marina and The Diamonds
  • "Talk to Talk" - This Century
  • "Cheap Thrills" - Junior Prom
  • "Girlfriend in a Coma" - The Smiths
  • "Undercover Martyn" - Two Door Cinema Club
  • "Elise" - YesNoMaybe
  • "Cut It Out" - Kitten
  • "Zero Zero" - Gerard Way

You don't know how happy it makes me that Gerard Way is on the station now. Holy smokes. His new record, Hesitant Alien, is killer and if you haven't listened to it, you should. It's one of the best that has come out this year, in my opinion.

Another record that recently came out that's pretty killer is White Noise by Pvris. They're currently on tour with Tonight Alive, which I think is a sort of odd mix, but yay for female fronted bands.

I'm closing off this blog post with Fall Out Boy's performance from Jimmy Kimmel this week. Big Hero 6 comes out Friday, and this song is the lead song off of the soundtrack, so why not? I love the lyric change in the first verse and Patrick's vocals sound the best they've sounded in a live TV performance, in my opinion. Check it out:

Panic! in Phoenix and some "Punk Ass Kids" + 10/22 playlist

Long time no see.

Today was my first DJ shift in two weeks (last week I found out an hour before going in that I got cancelled, but I had homework to do, so it was all good) and it went pretty swimmingly.

There's been a news radio class who's been coming in halfway through my shifts to do reports, and that's all cool, but sometimes it kills my vibes. Listen to the playlist on 8tracks here if you missed out! Here's what I was able to play today:

  • "Wild Heart" - Bleachers
  • "The Wire" - HAIM
  • "Rude Boy" - Diners
  • "Sweet Disposition" - The Temper Trap
  • "Luv, Hold Me Down" - DROWNERS
  • "I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You" - Black Kids
  • "Run" - The Maine
  • "Shut Up and Dance" - Walk the Moon
  • "Back in Black" - AC/DC
  • "California English" - Vampire Weekend
  • "Ghosts" - Northern Hustle
  • "Do I Wanna Know?" - Arctic Monkeys
  • "Hollywood" - Marina and the Diamonds

I had no idea that we had Marina on the station, so I was so happy when the news update class was in there and I was scrolling through songs and I saw her. Speaking of Marina, I'm so stoked to hear the entirety of Froot, because the title track is so good. 2015 is going to be such a good year for music.

A week from today I will not be broadcasted because I'm attending the Yahoo! On The Road concert. Panic! At The Disco is the headliner in Phoenix, and they're only playing Phoenix, which makes up for skipping us on The Gospel Tour over the summer. I can't wait to see one of my favorite bands with some of my best friends and make new ones while waiting in line. That review will be up next Friday on COTMA Sounds, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Check out my article about DROWNERS live at Pub Rock two weeks ago here.

My boys in Hollywood Ending announced yesterday that they're finally putting out new music in the form of another EP, their second this year. The Anywhere EP was so good and after hearing a bit of what they have in store for the Punk Ass Kids EP (I heard "Punk Ass Kids" live on the Live Forever Tour and watched live videos of "Zero Gravity" from their east coast Turn Up Tour), I'm so excited for the edgier/rockier Hollywood Ending to finally come out. I'll be reviewing that for COTMA as well, but we'll have to wait until the EP comes out on November 30.

On that note, I'm bringing this blog post to a close. Life's been pretty crazy between school and work and everything in between, but I'm making it work. I've been living off of iced passion tea from Starbucks and grilled chicken from the dining hall. College life.

I'll leave you with a video I found that I saw at a student government conference back in high school. It features Tyler Joseph from twenty one pilots doing what he does best: spoken word. I rediscovered the video this week and it's been stuck in my brain ever since.

Stay street, my friends. I'll see y'all in 2 weeks.

Rainy days and good vibes: 10/8 playlist

Hello friends. Today it rained, and if you know me at all, I hate the rain. That didn't affect my playlist though, what really did was the news radio class who came in and cut my set a tad bit short. Here's what was played today during the 1:00 hour on The Blaze:

  • "Simple" - Nightmare and the Cat
  • "Cousins" - Vampire Weekend
  • "Reality" - Never Let This Go
  • "Holding On To You" - twenty one pilots
  • "Long Division" - Death Cab For Cutie
  • "Trouble" - Banana Gun
  • "Rollercoaster" - Bleachers
  • "Walk This Way" - Aerosmith
  • "Even Better Yet" - The Format
  • "Intro" - Northern Hustle
  • "Beware The Dog" - The Griswolds
  • "Boyfriend" - Best Coast

Missed it? Listen on 8tracks here. Tune in next week after fall break to hear more of my favorites and a way longer set! As always, listen live Wednesdays from 1-2 PM on blazeradioonline.com.

Future Sunsets + 9/24 & 10/1 playlists

Long time, no see, huh? I've been sick the past week or so, but I'm back.  My voice has yet to come home in full but for now, it'll do.

If you haven't heard, I'm officially my pals Future Sunsets' publicist, so that's pretty rad. Stream their debut single "Without Your Love" here on Spotify if you haven't already (also, spend the 99 cents and go grab it on iTunes here!). They also just put out a cover of Clean Bandit's "Rather Be", which you can watch the video for here and check out the download links in the description box of the video. They'll be in the studio (hopefully/probably) next month, so details for that will be coming out very soon.

First day at The Blaze + 9/3 playlist

So, today was my official first day as a radio disc jockey and I've only been on air for an hour but I can already tell I know that's where I belong.

When I first arrived to the studio, the music director, Amanda, was doing her weekly Wednesday noon to 1 PM shift.  We chatted about different bands that we both liked, quickly realizing we both had a mutual love for twenty one pilots, Ezra Koenig and Fall Out Boy (all of my favorite subjects). Once I started my set, she commented on my selections (I kicked off my set with The Chain Gang of 1974's "Sleepwalking", who I saw in concert this past July) and gave me pointers and praised me before and after I went on air.  She left to go to her class after 15 minutes of sitting in and then I was all alone.

I felt at ease and so comfortable behind that microphone with the oversized headphones on.  I scrolled through the music library, noticing some of my local favorites (Miniature Tigers, The Maine, & Never Let This Go) that I selected to play during the local slots of the hour and finished my hour off with songs I noticed in the music library that I cannot stop listening to. During my talk breaks, I talked about how certain artists would be coming to town (DROWNERS & Arctic Monkeys), artists who I've seen live before (twenty one pilots) and artists who are a particular favorite (Vampire Weekend & fun.).

Playlist for today's show can be viewed below:

  • "Sleepwalking" - The Chain Gang of 1974
  • "Ya Hey" - Vampire Weekend
  • "Swimming Pool Blues" - Miniature Tigers
  • "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" - Arctic Monkeys
  • "Luv, Hold Me Down" - DROWNERS
  • "All The Pretty Girls" - fun.
  • "Forever Halloween" - The Maine
  • "Ode To Sleep" - twenty one pilots
  • "Here Comes The Sun" - The Beatles
  • "Forever" - HAIM
  • "Right Now" - Never Let This Go
  • "Fever" - The Black Keys
  • "Tongue Tied" - Grouplove
